Top sites in Marrakech #1
I play many roles in Marrakech, and concierge happens to be one of them. And perhaps my most favourite. So when it comes to recommending sights to see in Marrakech, my favourite stop is always the Maison de la Photographie. In fact, TripAdvisor recently named this privately owned museum the top museum in North Africa and the second best museum in Africa.
Though a bit tricky to find, the museum is located in one of the few truly authentic neighbourhoods of the medina, Kaat Benahid. Expect to see women and children balancing the platter of bread on their head as they walk to and from the local bread oven. Local hammams and WC throughout. And doorways leading to private oases.
But then step inside the museum to see the collection of photographs dating from the late 1800s – early 1900s and you’ll see that not much has changed since the photos were taken.
The warm welcome by the proud and inviting staff leads to the first courtyard.
After admiring the various portraits, landscapes and streetscapes, be sure to head up to the rooftop terrace. The view is just simply perfect. Perhaps best enjoyed with a glass of mint tea from the on-site cafe.
Back downstairs, reprints and postcards are available for purchase and can be rolled up for easy transport.
